'Spiritual home of feedlotting' hosts industry conference

FEEDLOT industry representatives from all over Australia gathered in Dalby this week for the Australian Lot Feeders' Association SMARTBEEF 2019 conference.

The two-day conference had speakers from diverse backgrounds, exposed delegates to the latest and greatest advancements in technology and discussed the biggest challenges impacting the industry.

ALFA president Bryce Camm said Dalby was the perfect place to host the conference, dubbing the region "the spiritual home of the Australian feedlotting industry”.

"I don't say that lightly. If you look at a 200km radius from the hub of Dalby, there's some 150 NFAS feedlots and some 576,000 head of capacity which represents 42per cent of our nation's feedlotting occupancy,” he said.

"It makes no question in my mind that we're in the heart of feedlot land and how exciting it is to bring all of you here to celebrate this great industry.”

The conference began on Thursday with keynote speaker

Dr Sam Barringer from Diamond V talking on food and national security.

High achievers in the industry were also recognised during the conference with awards presented for Young Lot Feeder of the Year, Excellence in Feedlot Education, Innovator of the Year, Outstanding Services to the Lot Feeding Sector and the Coopers Top Gun Award.

Mr Camm said it was "interesting” times for the industry with conditions challenging operators across the eastern seaboard, but nonetheless the industry continued to thrive.

"Strong global demand continues and allows the prosperity of this industry to continue,” he said.

"The demand for safe supply of high quality

and affordable protein is not dissipating and continues to grow, and it

is this sector that sits willing and ready to harness the opportunity in front of us.”

The conference concluded today with speakers on bedding, supplements and weather.
