Service is in the family for recruit
FROM scrubland to the high seas, Tara's Daniel Heuston is setting sail after enlisting in the Navy.
You could almost say the choice was in his blood, with both his parents serving in the Navy or the reserve for a combined total of 37 years.
It's almost a case of history repeating itself, after his father 'Tex' Heuston was sworn in on July 11, 1977, and left on the same day 20 years later. Daniel was sworn in on July 2.
"He was pretty stoked with that,” Mr Heuston said.
"He managed to ring us a couple of nights ago and he's been given the same nickname as what I had in the Navy which is 'Texas'.
"He rang up and said 'they're all calling me Texas, Dad', and I said 'I told you that would happen!'.
"So now the Navy's got another Texas Heuston.”
Daniel was sworn in the on HMAS Canberra, which Mr Heuston said was the flagship of the Navy.
"It's a very very big honour to be actually sworn in on the ship, but to be sworn in on the flagship is huge,” he said.
"We were all very, very proud of him on the day and I think all the parents there were.
"You couldn't wipe the smiles off their faces, including those of the recruits being sworn in.
"It was fantastic to see, an absolute delight.”
