Help your mates at social day on green

TOMORROW is one of the biggest days on the Dalby Golf Club's calendar - Greg McVeigh Mates Day.

This year is the 15th year the event has been held since it was first established in remembrance of a well- respected member of the club, Greg McVeigh, who died from cancer.

Event co-ordinator Peter McKinnon said preparations for the event which would support the Queensland Cancer Council, had gone smoothly.

"We're hoping to see somewhere between 80-100 players if the weather permits,” Mr McKinnon said.

"We had more than 100 participate last year and for a club of our size it is great to see such strong numbers each year.”

Mr McKinnon said the Greg McVeigh Mates Day was an event that catered to people of all abilities and experience levels and was a great opportunity for the community to gather in support of a worthy cause.

"Greg was a real character that was a huge part of our club and because of that the theme of the day each year is to have as much fun as you can as that is the type of person he was,” he said.

"We have the local branch of the Queensland Cancer Council on board once again and they will be running the barbecue and raffles, with most of the proceeds going to raising awareness and funding for cancer.”

Mr McKinnon also took time to recognise those who had played a pivotal role in helping the event maintain its significance in the community for more than a decade.

"In the 15 years that Greg McVeigh Mates Day has been running, for the most part we've had the same sponsors throughout that entire time which is really pleasing,” he said.

"I give them a call each year and they're always willing to support, so that is something we are extremely appreciative of as a club.”

Greg McVeigh Mates Day is a three-person ambrose event, and players are encouraged to be at the course by 10.30am in preparation for an 11am start.

Multiple prizes will be up for grabs courtesy of the sponsors.

For those interested in playing, registrations can be made at the club or by phoning the Pro Shop on 46622259.
