Club spirit gives C-Graders a go
It was a big club effort, but C Grade took to the field with some B Graders helping and the coach even having to turn down an offer from an A Grader to play, which tells us the culture and club spirit is in good hands.
It was a blustery autumn day in Goondiwindi with Dennis 'Stalwart' Wyatt leading the team out and guiding several debutantes around the oval well all day.
The kids, Brayden Hughes and Declan Crothers played above their years against the experienced Emus pack with some handy on-field coaching from Brett 'Crusty' Crothers.
First half jitters had the boys on the ropes but with a well-deserved meat pie from Zac Storey, being a menace in defence from 20 metres out gained the boys confidence going into second half.
Second half saw Crusty resting on wing until Crusty junior (Declan) put him away into space with a cracking pill and the old fella only had to catch and put down to score.
Crusty's version of events was a little different - apparently he was 50 metres out, beat one with ease, handled the second defender without a drama but with 20 metres to go some great cover defence was coming so the old school 'Crusty Don't Argue' came out which saw the Emus defender hit the deck as quick as he ran in.
There were some positives in the second half, but the bigger, stronger and more experienced Emus side got the win 56-12.
Player points went to Chris 'Grasshopper' Gleeson (1 point) for his chopping defence, young Brayden Hughes picked up two points for directing the play in heavy traffic and Zac Storey picked up a well earned three points with his relentless defence and attack.
We now have next weekend off, before taking on Rangers at Gold Park in a fortnight.
